Thoughts of Autumn
While I've always loved autumn -- the colors of the trees, the rustling sound of leaves blowing in the wind, the spicey smell of cider mulling on the stovetop -- it's been my getting back into knitting that has made me countdown the days to autumn. Cool weather and knitting just go so well together. Whether it be sitting outside knitting a big wooly sweater, or in the house cozied up to a roaring fire, the cooler weather just makes knitting that much better. At least, for me it does.
But, we're in the 3H part of summer here in the northeast. That's hazy, hot and humid for those of you fortunate enough to not have to deal with this weather. It's my least favorite time of the year. In my opinion, people were just not engineered to live in this weather! So, as a coping mechanism I've been surrounding myself with as many thoughts of autumn as possible. For example, the pic at the top of this post is my current wallpaper on my work laptop. Everytime I see this background I smile.
Then, there's the pumpkin pie yankee candle that I've been searching for. Nothing says autumn more than a good ol pumpkin pie! And I swear, if I could find a CD of autumnal sounds (rustling leaves, etc) I'd be piping that through my speakers at home. Crazy? I'll let you be the judge.
And as you may have noticed, all my knitting projects have turned to cool weather wear as well. Out with the cotton and microfiber, and in with the wool! The Noro sweater, my knee high socks, the Phildar hoodie, and the upcoming Gerbera-along. All wool and all wonderful.
I don't think I'm the only one with these feelings though. A quick peruse around the blogs shows many of us pulling out the wool -- Carrie's cabled V neck in a brown tweed, Jackie's Phildar hoodie, and Leigh's cabled sweater in Hebridean 2-ply (July 19th entry) just to name a few.
Even if I am crazy, at least I'm in good company!
You're not crazy, believe me, this humidity is unbearable. As much as I love going to the beach and wearing light summer clothing, I'd be completely thrilled if it turned into autumn tomorrow. Anyway, if I want to have that hoodie for Fall, I unfortunately have to work on it in summer!
I feel much better now! I've had thoughts of starting a scarf...a real winter-type scarf. In fact, I may just do that tonight!
Yeah, it's been nasty humid in CT too...let's just say that sitting there last night knitting linen drape during the movie - I WORKED UP A SWEAT...that's HUMID! :-)
Can't bring myself to pick up any wool yet...need much cooler days AND if I do I'll never finish the summer stuff in time to wear it this year, LOL..
I love your blog! I've been reading for a while but don't think I've ever commented. I love Autumn too. But in CA, there are few leaves turning color! And it's actually warmer in the first part of fall than the summer sometimes! I love pumpkin pie....I bet that candle smells GOOD!
You lucky person who lives in a place where the summer actually FEELS like summer.... I live in Germany but I grew up in Italy and cannot stand the cold weather. I LOVE it when it's hot and I sweat ;-)
So funny...I just put that image up as my desktop background yesterday! I'm so ready for September.

I'm with you about Autumn! I am from Harrisburg but have been in NC for at least a dozen years: talk about hot and humid! My favorite Yankee candle is Harvest. Great blog, by the way! I read often but comment never (till now!). I like to hear about familiar PA things you occasionally mention...
I'm ready for fall also! That desktop background is a favorite since I live in TN where autumn isn't as spectacular as I'm used to. I'm originally from NorthEast PA and I am ready for some crunchy leaves and mulled cider!! Yankee Candle is one of my favorite stores.. I have a few favorites but Pumpkin Pie is on the top of my list too!
