One More Christmas Gift

| | Comments (3)

I asked my sister-in-law Kelly to pick what she'd like me to make for her this year. I enjoy making things for her but I end up picking "safe" colors and designs because I don't want to make her something she wouldn't like and would be stuck using it regardless.

When I asked her for ideas on what she'd like she said something celtic. I immediately thought Alice Starmore. I sent her a link to the site and let her look around. She picked the Lismore Cushion. I think it will be lots of fun! Of course, to keep things interesting, she wants me to find more red/orange/yellow shades to use in place of the blues. I'm considering suggesting greens instead of more warm tones because I think the design needs some of the contrast. But she's got a good eye and knows what she likes, so if she says no I'll go with all warm tones.

A question - should I go for it and buy the AS yarns? Or should I substitute? And if so, what? Jamieson Spindrift DK is probably a good choice, but it looks to be just as pricey. Any ideas?

Try ordering from Jamieson and Smith. My MIL has looked there for yarn to use in Alice Starmore designs. Wendy talks about them in her October 3, 2003 entry. Here's the link to their site.

I've just received some yarn from the Alice Starmore/ Virtual Yarn site and it is lovely stuff - I'm planning on knitting one of her early designs, Elizabeth I, soon. The yarn is lovely and has real depth and interest, not just a flat colour. I haven't seen any of the other yarns 'in the flesh' though so don't know how they compare. Look ing forward to seeing what you make of the cushion cover!
