FO: Calla Coasters

Calla Coasters

As soon as I saw a pic of the Calla Coasters from the purl bee I knew I had to make them.

yarn: Lily Sugar 'n Cream in White
fabric backing: Amy Butler Lotus in the Clay Temple Garland print
pattern: Calla Coasters both knit and crochet, as well as 2 of my own crocheted coasters
needles: knit picks options 4.5 mm / US #7

I made 3 of the knitted versions, 1 of the crocheted versions, and 2 more crocheted ones that I made up.

As always, more pics can be found on my flickr.

Click on the extended entry for the crochet patterns.

popcorn stitch: Work 5 dc into next dc, drop loop off hook, insert hook into 1st dc, pickup dropped st and draw through

crochet coaster #1

Crochet Coaster #1

Chain 4. Join into a ring with a slip stitch

Round 1: Chain 4. Work [1 dc, 1 ch] 11 times into ring, sl st into 3rd of 4ch at beg of round.

Round 2: Chain 6. [Popcorn stitch, chain 5] 12 times. On the 12th space, only do 4 dcs, because the Chain 6 at the start will be the last dc. Sl st into 3rd of 6ch at beg of round.

Round 3: [Chain 1, sc 4] repeat until end of round. At end of round, sl st into 1st sc of round.

crochet coaster #2

Crochet Coaster #2

Round 1: Chain 4. Work [1 dc, 1 ch] 11 times into ring, sl st into 3rd of 4ch at beg of round.

Round 2: Chain 6. [ Popcorn stitch, chain 3, 1dc in next dc] 5 times. Then, work 1 more popcorn stitch, chain 3, and sl st into 3rd of 6ch at beg of round.

Round 3: Chain 1. [Work 3 sc in next space, ch 1] 12 times. Then, slip stich in chain at beg of round.

I'm not much of a crocheter (is that a word?) so if something seems strange just let me know!

backing

Place the coaster on top of 2 layers of the backing fabric. Trace an outline 1/8" outside of the coaster.

Put right sides together and sew together using a 1/4" seam allowance. Leave a 1-1/2" gap. Clip curve being careful not to snip sewing thread, turn inside out and iron.

Center the coaster on the bottom of the coaster, and hand stitch the backing to the coaster using coordinating thread.

Wow, that was fast! I like the way the fabric medallions worked out. The white yarn also looks good with the white in the fabric -- I hadn't noticed that before.
